Why am I bothered about Big Brother’s website security?

Good question. Do I really care about a reality TV show? Am I bothered? Why am I bothered?

The site that the behindbigbrother.com crew got into is run by Three Mobile. I am one of their customers. Instead of a few photos, what if they’d boosted my credit card number? Or yours?

So yes, I am bothered.

Update: the behindbigbrother.com crew have the following message on their homepage now (as at 2150 AEST/22.04.2007):

We are receiving many emails from users encountering security problems on the official website, including people being able to view your personal address and mobile phone details. Until this is fixed we recommend you DO NOT register or log into the official Big Brother website.

Really? :)

Yep… I’m sure they’d leave credit card numbers on their WAP sites the same way they would do with photos they were planning to make public anyway…

Some sites used to be that porous - if you were in, you were all the way in. Besides this, if they are dumb enough to put time-embargoed material into a site-accessible staging environment then who knows what else they are capable of? :)

I agree. Don’t go to the Big Brother website…. please? Pretty please?

Haven’t we had enough of garbage commercial television programmes?

    Matt,

I am not sure that there is much difference conceptually between a reality TV show like Big Brother and reading a historical romance - both allow us to switch off. Both let us think outside our own squares by putting ourselves in someone else’ shoes. The commercial difference is probably only in degree - and by discussing the failures of the Big Brother website I am probably helping to promote it.

    Cheers, Andrew
